This annual event is a competition among representatives of Bowls USA's seven divisions. While Bowls USA sponsors the event, it is hosted and operated by a club.
Divisions are represented by the winners of Playdowns held during the year.

The Championships were first played as a men's event in 1957. Women's events were added in 1977. Prior to 2008, this tournament was know as the "U.S. Championships".
