The Marker

Markers assist in singles games.
They are invaluable in making the game more focused for players, more enjoyable for spectators and less stressful for tournament officials.
Singles matches are impossible without the generous and knowledgeable service of a marker!

Anyone with a working knowledge of bowls can participate as a marker during a singles match.
Feel free to make a tournament official aware of your interest in helping out.

The Marker's Role

In pairs, triples and fours variations of the game, a team member is always available at the "head" end of the rink to perform many functions.
In a singles match the Marker assists with many of the same functions, including but not limited to:
  • setting the jack on the center line as directed by the lead bowler
  • returning the jack when it is delivered out-of-play
  • removing bowls that are out-of-play
  • showing the position of the jack if asked
  • marking bowls that have touched the jack
  • acting when a bowl from a neighboring rink would interfere
  • informing the bowler (e.g., which team holds shot or distance from the jack)
World Bowls prescribes Marker duties in the Laws of the Sport of Bowls Crystal Mark Third Edition.
