Inducted into Bowls USA Hall of Fame: 2013
Club: San Francisco
Bill Campbell was that rare individual: an active, highly-competitive bowler for over 50 years, a true gentleman in the classic sense who made countless friends and significant contributions to advance our sport and club.
One could ask almost any member of the San Francisco Lawn Bowling Club over the past 20 to 30 years who taught them to lawn bowl and the answer would be Bill Campbell, or “Mr. Campbell.” He developed a proven, consistent training method and it’s estimated that he introduced over 1500 people to lawn bowls. Virtually every week Bill was on the green encouraging new bowlers to learn the game, its rules, regulations and etiquette. He “cuts a fine figure” too, as noted by the California AAA magazine, Via, and several web sites. Bill exemplified all that is good about our sport.
Bill’s track record as a bowler is impressive locally, within PIMD and nationally. Based on his performance as a bowler he was inducted into the Bowls USA Hall of Fame in 2013 and named SFLBC “Bowler of the Year” three times.
Our longest active member, joining in 1964, Bill is fondly remembered as a dear friend, mentor and coach to so many. He passed away peacefully at his home in San Francisco on October 9, 2020
News from around the Bowls community of interest to all.
