Bowls USA regrets to announce that the US Open Committee came to the decision that they cannot host the 2022 US Open this year in the Southwest Division for various reasons.

President's Message - March 2022

Dear Members,
Spring is nearing and like every year, it seems to be going by faster and faster. The pandemic has somewhat subsided in some parts of the country especially with the Omicron surge passing. Some of our Divisions like South Central have been hosting tournaments successfully, most recently their SC Open back in mid-February with great attendance from both Canada and many different Divisions.
With the dates of the National Championships set this year, Bowls USA is looking forward to hosting this event in a safe environment. We are looking at adopting some COVID guidelines to protect both our domestic and international players as well as our volunteers and spectators. More to come later.
In addition, I would like to share with you some news regarding our 1st Vice President, Wayne Baines. He has decided to withdraw from his current position and wanted to share this message:
Like many of us, my life has changed in the last two years. Beginning with Scott and continuing now with Veronica, there have been thoughtful leadership in evolving Bowls USA to serve the greater bowls community. Having considered the commitment, passion and time I believe should be associated with the duties of the President of Bowls USA, I came to the difficult decision that I would not be the right person for that role when the time came. I chose to submit my resignation now so that Veronica would have time to work directly with Arthur and the rest of the Executive Committee for an effective transition at the end of her term. It has been a pleasure and an honor to have served on the Executive Committee. My sincere thanks to all those that pitched in and gave their generous assistance to me while I was on the EC. See you on the greens.

With this announcement, Arthur Stewart of PIMD, who is currently the 2nd Vice President of Bowls USA has graciously accepted to step into the role of 1st Vice President with the Council’s approval. This year we will need to fill the role of 2nd Vice President by the Annual General Meeting on October 1, 2022. Therefore, I have decided to implement the Nominating Committee this year sooner rather than later so that we can get the word out and find the best candidates for this role. Our current Bowls USA Nominating Committee consists of one Councilor from each Division and a Chairperson. This year’s Chair is Patrick Duffy of the Northeast Division. The other representatives are listed as follows:
- Central Division = Bob Schneider
- Northeast Division: Patrick Duffy, Chair
- Northwest Division: Nathan Van Ness
- Pacific Inter-Mountain Division: Gareth Cole
- South Central Division: Ron Rollick
- Southeast Division: Martha Nielsen
- Southwest Division: Jan Hargraves
I also wanted to share with you that the Councilors approved the change to have the state of Colorado reassigned to the South Central Division instead of the Central Division. This change was initiated by Colorado. Currently we have one lawn bowling green in Denver, CO called the Washington Park Lawn Bowling Club.
Lastly, we are still in need of a Bowls USA Newsletter Editor as that was one of the responsibilities that Wayne held. If you’re interested in writing and sharing news about Bowls from all around the country, please let us know.
As always, I wish you all the best in health and bowls.
